Food: 3.5 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4.5 Cleanliness: 4 Most Green Valley restaurants go in waves of great to "good enough" when it comes to food quality and service. This specific restaurant fits that description. My parents (and grandparents) have been coming here on and off for years. Based on my experience and theirs, the best time to dine here is for breakfast or brunch. This place can get super hectic during the winter time, when a lot of the people (snowbirds) that live here during the fall/winter/spring are out. Today when we went in, the snowbirds had left and the quality of food and service had vastly improved. In sum, busy season, busy restaurant hours equals okay food and service; a touch slower, less people and service is slightly better and food is delicious! I typically order the same thing every time-- the Huevos Racheros. This is one dish I have sampled in other regions of the U.S., and have not found any better than right here in good ol' Green Valley. It comes with a side of corn or flour tortillas; either choice is good! Also mild or hot salsa- take your pick. I love the decor in here-- it's VERY southwest- with a touch of Mexico. There vibrant colors like deep purple, teal and orange with dark wooden Mexican doors and great big leather booths. The walls are adorned with Mexican metal art and highlights of gold and silver dabbled all around. I like it here. It works. Would I return? Of course! Give me some more of those one of a kind Huevos Rancheros!

Just kind of okay. Very friendly staff. Marginal Mex food or as some here call it - Minnesota Mexican. No big draw to go back. Tomato sauce salsa. Basic Mex foods - just kind of okay. I am bummed, I was really hoping for at least 1 good Mex place. Oh well. I guess this is best as a mindless place to eat some food.

Majorly disappointed with this one. I figured being this close to Mexico I'd get some decent Mexican food. The chips and salsa seemed mass produced. I mean really, pouring it out?? The entrees weren't all that great. Burrito was chicken and tortilla and that's it. Rice and beans seemed mass produced and nay all that tasty. Carne asada was tasty, but way salty. Chimichanga was just meat, but at least came with guacamole and sour cream. The service was ok, but I did have to ask for a fork to go with my knife do I could eat. The dessert was on another level. The flan was probably one of the best ever. Fried cheesecake was superb as well. So, I'd say go here for dessert.

We had the soup. They had chicken vegetable and Tortilla soup on the menu. We were looking for Chicken tortilla so we asked the waitress if she could mix the two soups. She said sure. It was delicious! The bowls were huge, almost more than a person could eat at one time. The restaurant was clean and service was prompt.

large place with plenty of tables. we were greeted as soon as we walked in and were seated very quickly. Didn't love my waitress - she barely made eye contact and wasn't very friendly, but I can chalk that up to a bad day. the food was decent. the first bowl of chips were cold, the second was nice and hot. they offer hot and mild salsas; neither of which I loved. the mild didn't have much flavor and the hot tasted like it was flavored with chili powder which was a little odd. I had the green cold tamales. they were really great. moist, a little sweet, and very tasty. the rice and beans weren't worth the calories. my friend got the cheeseburger quesadilla with fries which he enjoyed.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon after the lunch rush. Service was friendly and very prompt. The food was okay. I ordered the fish tacos and wouldn't have gotten them if I had known they would be deep fried. It was too heavy for me, but the picture with the avocados on the menu looked yummy. It is a decent place for standard Mexican food.

I did not have high expectations for a Mexican place in Green Valley (the land of old gringos) but the food was actually pretty good. And cheap! My mom and I had lunch here and it was only $15 for the two of us. Their tortillas are very authentic and I really liked the chips and salsa. Service was fantastic as well. I will be back.

I enjoy this place, they have the same exact recipe for chips and salsa as Manuel's, both owned by relatives, I still like to go here even though I feel like on busy nights their food can be a bit bland, the tortilla soup was not very flavorful, and there isn't really anything special about the meat. Just an okay spot for a quick bite.

4 1/2 stars. This place is soooo good. 3/22/15 and food is still amazing. Home made flour tortillas awesome. The fajita skillet is so flavorful. Still my favorite restaurant near green valley.

I think they ran out of spices in the kitchen. We've been here plenty of times at lunch, our first dinner and so bland! Great Tortilla Soup but the flautas, rice, beans, salsa and cheese enchiladas were bland. We felt really bad when seated in the middle of the crowded room like bad children, but reaaly felt punished to have our order taken last even though we were there before some other tables, then wait staff asked all nearby tables if they wanted more chips but they didn't ask us, then the hostess walked around the entire dining room handing out calendars to every single table except ours. We don't want to be treated special, we want to be treated the same and we looked just like everyone else there. And then getting nicely prepared but bland Mexican food 32 miles from Mexico just made us wish we had stayed home!

Good food. Efficient service. Companion's margarita was tasty. Very busy dinner crowd. Plenty of parking. It was worth waiting 20 minutes.

On our trip to Arizona we selected this restaurant based on online reviews. Overall, we found this restaurant to provide generally good service, a reasonably priced menu and quality food. The salsa and chips at the beginning were fresh and tasty. The restaurant offers a very large menu and options. The main meal was fine; the portions were very large. The "two" combination meal is plenty. I had a tamale & beef enchilada (w/ refried beans & rice)..... gigantic plate ... too much to eat! Now, the Margaritas were small, expensive and light on the tequila .... Definitely NOT a good combination .... my last Margarita here!! I did have significant indigestion the next day .... I cannot totally attribute this condition to this restaurant ... but I have not had indigestion in years.

3 FOR FOR LUNCH, 3 SICK So very sick. Before we even arrived to our cars in the parking lot! Manuel' is much better.

I love the two item lunch. The service is prompt. I like stoping in for lunch because they are pretty fast to get your order out. Food is always good and fresh.

Visited on a Friday night around 4. The place was already teeming with customers with 4 sheriff deputies at one booth and 8 or 9 authentic cowboys (2 large horse trailers in the parking lot gave them away as did them wearing their stetson's at the table) at a larger table. We received a very friendly greeting and were given a booth in the back which was much quieter. The menu was huge! Even though she was very busy, the waitress was friendly and took our order for drinks right away. We ordered the catfish lunch plate (smaller than the dinner she said) and one of the combination plates. Another waitress came around with pitchers of hot and mild salsa and served us a basket of freshly made warm corn chips. We were a bit surprised when the meal came...it was served on large dinner platters! The catfish was huge and delicious. It came with cole slaw, refried beans, a generous portion of cooked veggies, AND french fries. Glad I didn't get the dinner portion! The fish and all the rest were great! The combination meal was also very large and we ended up taking parts of both meals home. Both meals were only $22 with one beer but no dessert. There were at least 10 people standing outside waiting for a table when we left. We will be trying other restaurants during our visit, but we will be going back to La Placita a few more times before we leave.

Second visit this trip. All is good. Strawberry margarita then green corn tamale with rice and beans in lieu of taco salad like I had the other day. It was a good change. Service good, food tasty, margarita good, priced right.

Excellent food and service. Tortilla soup was spot-on, as well as the Rancho Camarones. Also, the first Mexican restaurant I've ever been in that had Tiramisu on the menu.

A solid three stars is a perfect rating for this small, glorified taqueria. A real messy little kitty that is a mish-mosh of remodels that boasts a steady local clientele and all the Mexican accent pieces the walls can hold. The surprising highlight? The chicken soup. Big pieces of white chicken, rice, carrots & zucchini in a smooth broth. It comes with crackers but I got a side of tortillas. The rest of the family enjoyed the carne asada, burritos and a cheese crisp before the entrees. Prepare to wait about 15 minutes for a table on weekend dinners but the service is fast, the salsa flows like wine and your cups will runneth over with never ending non-alcoholic beverages. The margaritas looked good, though. Maybe give those a shot?

Last time I was in Sahuarita (4 years ago), we ate this place for breakfast twice and dinner once. Breakfast was a way better experience so when the whole family was on vacation in Sahuarita, I said we must go back there for breakfast. Big mistake! I know there's going to be a difference in AZ Mexican food and Texas Mexican food so I don't hold the bar too high. This place was just mediocre at best. The were like two other tables in the whole place and they set our part of 6 all the way in the back. Our waitress started off by asking if anyone wanted coffee, my dad of course was the only one and she pours him a cup then walks off. Doesn't ask if any of the three other adults or two small children would like something to drink just walks away. She eventually comes back and asks if we are ready to order, my dad luckily pipes up and says how about you guys order your drinks while we look at the menu. On a side note: the menu is super massive I mean like 6 Full on pages of just BREAKFAST! We order our drinks then she comes back by to get our order. The food comes out and the breakfast burritos were large and impressive but the plates were all lackluster. She asks if we would like salsa. We say yes please. She asks if we want mild or hot. We say hot. This salsa is the most pitiful salsa I have ever tasted. I think some medium salsas are too spicy for me but this "hot" salsa was like canned tomatoes. That's all you tasted was tomatoes absolutely no heat at all! We were pretty disappointed in the salsa. I can't image what the "mild" salsa tastes like. We finish up our food and wait for our ticket for almost 20 minutes before we finally go up to the counter area and ask a waitress to get our check. For 4 adults and 2 children- around 60- before tip Which I found kind of high for breakfast. Anyways we will not be back during our next stay which is sad because we just got a vacation home near the area. Skip this place and try somewhere else.

We went there with a group of people and there was plenty of food and plenty of margaritas. We were able to order the maragaritas by the pitcher. They were very tasty, I might add. The food was good and the chips and salsa plentiful. I paid particular attention to the pitchers of margaritas as I had previously broken my foot earlier in the day (of course, I didn't know that yet) but it hurt nonetheless so I needed a pain killer. These definitely did the trick. I enjoyed the food and drinks. The service was a bit slow but it was a bit busy there so I'll give them that. I look forward to a return trip.

Up until recently, this used to be one of my favorite places to eat :( about a month ago, my fiance and I went in because I was having a pregnancy craving for it. The waitress we had was a snotty, rotten brat who asked for clarification on my order 3 times by asking "what?!" I order the same thing every friggin time! I ordered chicken flautas with rice and beans. So, this lady comes over with toastadas...I DIDN'T ORDER THOSE WTF! And then she gives me a dirty look for sending them back. Finally she gets my order right, and I take a bite into my flautas, there's a tooth pick in them. I picked at my plate and my fiance and I went to pay the bill, where we had to wait 20 minutes to get help. The place wasn't even busy. Sorry, I won't be coming back to choke on your toothpicks anymore.

Trying to decide between 2 an 3 stars. Mexican Pizza was good. Much of the other food lacked flavor and the pork tamale was kinda gross... Very dry not good. Service was really hectic and that's one reason we wouldn't go back. I thought the prices were okay. Salsa nothing special though chips were wood. Probably worth a second try given there's not that much to choose from around GV, shiny guacamole and cheese and sour cream. Kind of unnatural.

I've been to this restaurant many times over 11 years when I visit family in Green Valley. It's never been a favorite, mainly because of the service. This last time it was terrible: the rude old hag waitress slammed plates down on the table in annoyance because my mother was a little confused with the menu. Green Valley is a nice retirement community, the staff should be used to older folks. The food was incredibly awful! Everything was overcooked bordering on burnt, and tasted canned, frozen, and stale. Never again. Manuel's in Green Valley is a much better choice, and treat their customers with some dignity and respect.

The salsa. The salsa is so tasty I can't begin to stress how tasty. Cilantro-ey, salty, spicey and delicious. You could put this stuff on anything and it transforms it into a mariachi party in your mouth. The rest of the menu is quite delicious - fresh ingredients, clean, but nothing compared to that salsa! I rarely dine in, I just pick up chips and salsa to go... and usually mow them down in the civic before I even get home! As other reviews have stated, there is a "competitor" restaurant named Manuel's in Green Valley as well, owned by another family member. It is quite interesting - the rest of the town is completely divided between these two restaurants as well!! But - my vote is for La Placita!!!

Not a destination Mexican restaurant, as another Yelper pointed out, but if you're in GV and have a hankering for Mexican food, La Placita would be an OK choice. The chili relleno, cheese enchilada, and bean tostada were fine, as were the frijitas. Just nothing to write home about. The salsas, hot and mild, and the chips were excellent. Service was a bit hectic...I suspect someone didn't show up for work today as they were rushing about trying to accommodate everyone. Our server was a bit snappish but provided us with what we wanted. I just didn't want to contribute to her unhappiness by asking for more. The place was packed with regulars and though the prices were a tad on the high side, I can see why folks eat here.

Delicious! Delicious! Delicious!! The service was quick and we had a never ending supply of fresh warm chips and home-made salsa (mild and hot). My enchilada a la carte was warm and very fulfilling. My fiancé had the cheeseburger quesadilla and he loved it!! Never had anything like it before. My parents' food was amazing! They had the supreme grande burrito and the chicken chimichanga. We all left very satisfied!! The establishment was well kept. We weren't walking on sticky floors, sitting on dirty seats, or eating on dirty tables. My fiancé and I live in Peoria and will make it back down here again, and when we do, we will be back here !

Tried this place today after roaming the farmer's market, and won't make a point of going back. We were seated very quickly, but then sat for longer than we should have before receiving menus. One things I will say, the iced tea (real brewed) was fantastic! The salsa had a decent flavor and nice chunks of cilantro, but other than some very small onion bits, the rest is puree which I'm not a fan of. Both my friend and I ordered tacos. He prefers soft shell and I prefer hard, so that's what we ordered. The description said the crisp shells were "folded over" which made me hope it was the kind that start soft and they fry to a crisp, but sadly it turned out to be the pre-made hard shells. The soft shell was the worst I've ever seen, and my friend ended up eating the filling out of the second one and leaving the tortilla. It was pasty looking and just not good. Flavor-wise, the fillings were ok. Sparse on the cheese but that's common. Nothing special about them. Once again they took a pretty long time to pick up our credit card that was sitting out as a hint. At least my tea didn't run dry. Just ok, based on what we tried.

Terrible. My first negative review - so here goes. Ordered the lunch special (enchiladas). Food was not very hot. And the beef filling tasted like it had been on the stove for hours. My wife's food lacked any spicy flavor. Even the salsa was disappointing. This was our third visit in the last few years-and our last visit.

My husband and I decided to try this place after we heard it was under new management and the food was better. We went in today, Sunday, about 10:30 AM and were greeted by a friendly young lady. She told us we could sit wherever we wanted, so we found a booth. After a couple of minutes, a server brought us water, placed it on the table, never said a word to us and walked away. A few minutes later, two anglo ladies sat at a booth across from us. The same server came to them and greeted them with a huge smile and hello and asked them if they wanted some coffee. My husband and I just looked at each other with disbelief. The hispanic server was rude and unprofessional to us (hispanics), yet she was over-the-top friendly to the anglo ladies. Well we decided that we weren't going to stay. On our way out, I spoke with the manager and told him what we had experienced and he didn't appear to care. He gave us an insincere sounding apology and didn't offer to make things right. Needless to say, we will not be going back. There are plenty other places in this area that will accept our kind and our money.

We were in Green Valley for a week and ate at this restaurant twice for lunch and once for a late breakfast. All of our meals were excellent. The service was friendly and efficient. The salsa was excellent. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, and the staff is well trained.

We walked into this restaurant around 7:30 and they were about to close at 8:00. We were amazed at all the people just finishing up thier meals and were smiling on thier way out - they seemed to have had a good time - we certainly did. Within minutes our orders were taken and the food arrived before we were able to finish out ice cold pitcher of beer. My Chile verde was full of soft cubes of pork and peppers floating in a tomatillo sauce and served with home made tortillas. Two other people had the Chimichangas and had mixed reactions, Enchiladas were ordered and they cleaning thier plates by the end of thier meals, All and all, the place had some of the best service I have had in a long time. I think the flavors were toned down to match this retirement community south of Tucson - but the food was okay tonite. I will definitely return - but will order something with more pep in it next time.

La Placita is a fantastic place to catch some breakfast, supper or anything in between! The restaurant is very nice as well as clean and tidy. The chips and salsa were very good, maybe the best I've had in Green Valley. The service is very quick, endless supply of chips, drinks arrive nearly instantly and food is quick to follow! The owner is always there making sure that the food and service is consistently above par. I think this place is amazing and I go frequently. They also provide catering services that I have had the pleasure of encountering on more than one occasion. Bottom line, if you're looking for great Mexican food in Green Valley, no matter time of day or if you need it catered, look no further than La Placita!

First an irony: Prior to my review, La Placita had only 2 1/2 stars while Manuel's (the other major Green Valley/Sahuarita Mexican restaurant), which I believe is owned by a relative and has virtually the same food and menu, has 5. Makes no sense, but I am in the middle on both places (and I do agree Manuel's deserves a very, very slight edge). IMHO, this place has quite decent "neighborhood" Mexican food. It is NOT destination quality (especially for Southern Arizona), but it's not bad. And like most restaurants, its menu has highs and lows. Unfortunately the other reviewer here who gave it low marks hit some of the low points: The chile rellenos are over breaded and probably frozen--not even made with the traditional chile poblano and are served more or less dry with very little sauce. Niether are the refritos anything to write home about and the rice is just OK. On the other hand, their chicken soup, which comes with most meals, is outstanding. And their albondigas, served only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, is also very good. Another standout is the "sizzling fajitas" (beef or chicken but I always get the beef) which is a special and deserves to be. There are a number of other specials I haven't tried but they are leading candidates to be good as compared to the Mexican standards (tamales, enchilladas, tacos etc) which are nothing special (possibly excepting the pork chile verde burrito which can be served "enchillada style", i.e. with more green sauce on top--another menu highlight).

I was surprised at the other two reviews, but maybe I went on a couple of good days. I really liked their salsas and thought their beans were really good. I am a Huge fan of Mexican food and could pretty much eat it every day, so I've tried my fair share of Mexican restaurants. And I thought this one was pretty darn good. (I do eat at Taco Bell occasionaly, so if you want to take my opinions with a small grain of salt, I will completely understand.) I had a chicken burrito one day and a chicken taco another day. The beans, rice and salsa were great both times and my husband liked the food too. The place is a little dated, but I like that they have longevity in the community and seemed to be the "local" place to go. I will definitely eat here again, and probably more often than I should! :)

I'm a great fan of Mexican food. If I could eat only two types of cuisine for the rest of my life, they would be Mexican and Chinese. So, when I try a new place, I'm fussy. This one doesn't measure up, even though the servers are Mexican and the salsa was good, the food was merely so-so. I ordered the two-item luncheon plate: Tamale & chili relleño. It comes with rice and beans. the rice was dry; the beans were flat and the relleño was bland. I guess the tamale was okay, but I've certainly had much better. So - no, I don't recommend this one.

I love the food and fast service there. The only thing my husband stopped going there was because he felt discriminated. The servers tend to speak Spanish with me (and I'm not Spanish descendant) and they always leave him on the side. But the food is great!

Average quality, nothing outstanding. Worth the money, not a unique experience. I will say to defer to other reviews on this one

I've eaten here probably a dozen times. This is a "cumulative" review. I debated giving it 3 stars but really with Manuel's just a couple of miles away I don't even think twice about passing these guys and going there. They have virtually the same menu (although many friends choose one fave for nachos, another for fajitas, and vice versa). They do not have the sweet green tamales that M's has, but they do serve breakfast, which M does not. Really, what makes the big difference for me is atmosphere. The bldg is old and whenever we have more than 4 people they seat us in the bar (not where I want to be when I'm with the kids and grandparents). The servers never seem too excited to see you, and on a couple of different occasions we have had very slow or poor service. The clientele is almost exclusively snow birds and retirees who aren't afraid to show you what they think of your energetic child. We keep going back when my husband wants dinner at breakfast time (they have breakfast enchiladas, etc) and because we sometimes defer to the friends who swear this one is better than M's.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
